As a child, hidden away in a basement with a group of survivors 23 days after the outbreak began, listening to the crackling of emergency comms, she clung to her mother and with her finger traced the lines of her inked name on her mom’s arm. She remembers her mother, the same woman who would one day call herself Alpha, singing Groucho Marx’s “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” against the blare of sirens in the background, but it’s the image of her father, Frank, that’s seared into her brain. Memory isn’t always the most reliable source of information. Every time we think back on a memory, we’re inadvertently rewriting it in our minds. Maybe, during one such remembrance, Lydia recalls her father shaving in front of a mirror instead of her mother, maybe she remembers he dove to protect her from a walker instead of another man, maybe she remembers the words of “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” coming from someone else’s lips. Trauma affects everyone differently and, through Lydia, the writers of The Walking Dead explore what happens when the brain of a young girl rewrites memories to protect the body. It’s not the most well-executed exploration ever put to television — HBO’s The Tale set a new bar — but it’s an admirable effort. Daryl is still listening by the window of the Hilltop jail cell as Lydia recounts some of these reworked memories to Henry. She remembers her father getting ready to go outside with members of their group from the same basement bunker, but Alpha tells him to stay and let the others go. They just need to wait it out. For those of us keeping tabs on all aspects of The Walking Dead, the Fear spin-off seems to have been quietly preparing us for The Whisperers, who now feel like a conglomerate of the Vultures and the Filthy Woman. Like the Vultures, they are convinced that all settlements will inevitably crumble, so they resolve to remain quiet while others try and fail. Like the Filthy Woman, Lydia mentions that “hunger is a gift.” It keeps her strong, it reminds her of her survival instincts. It’s when you go soft, she says, that people die. Another memory of a young Lydia finding a white sheet to wear over herself as a Halloween costume foreshadows that more gruesome aspect of the Whisperers masking themselves as the dead at a time when, Frank mentions, it’s Halloween every day. It’s when Daryl, another figure who suffered abuse as a child at the hands of a parent, intervenes that Lydia’s memory reveals itself as the unreliable protagonist. When Henry starts revealing details about Hilltop and the Kingdom, Daryl pulls him out of the cell and decides to try a calmer method of interrogation. He listens as Lydia recounts a moment when Matthias, a man in her old group, starts panicking. Her mother says all they need to do is shut up and wait it out, but Matthias tries to pull down the wooden boards and escape. Alpha attacks and, whether intentionally or not, kills him, while Lydia’s father sings “Lydia the Tattooed Lady.” It’s a song, Lydia admits, Frank sang to soothe her as a kid, without acknowledging how she once remembered her mother singing the same melody. The tattoo, even, shifts from her mother’s arm to her father’s. “What my mom does, she does for a reason,” Lydia says, partly to convince Daryl, but mostly to convince herself. Earlier, Tara took Magna’s group on a mission to find Luke and Alden, but all they found were their slain horses. Yes, Alpha has done unspeakable things, but, to Lydia, it’s because she didn’t have a choice. Even the cuts and bruises all over her body were supposedly inflicted to make her strong. Her memory begins to warp even further as she looks back to the aftermath of Matthias’ death. Earlier, she called up an image of Frank cutting off his beard in a mirror, saying, “The world’s over. I’m going to do what I want.” His beard now returns fully formed while Alpha is bald. In this memory, the group decides to wait till morning to remove Matthias’ body, but later that night he reanimates as a walker and attacks Lydia. She remembers her father stepping in to save her and that’s how he ended up dead. A later visit from Henry proves that, too, was a lie. It’s only when Henry comes to Lydia’s cell at night to let her walk around Hilltop, facing her with proof that settlements can thrive in this world, that the real memories flood back. The sounds of a crying baby force open the vault to reveal it was Alpha who cut off her hair in the mirror. It was also Alpha who killed her father in the chaos in the basement for his unwillingness to let Alpha take their child out into danger. The next morning, Daryl, who watched the whole midnight walkabout, finds her back in her cell. She’s more cooperative and he now feels more for her due to their shared trauma. It becomes a complication as they spot Alpha leading a group of Whisperers to the gates of Hilltop to demand her daughter back. Magna’s group had voted to go out in the middle of the night to look for Luke, but it was too dark so they decided to go back. Kelly, however, began to break down. Details of Coalport, the settlement they crossed previously, remain elusive, but this interaction divulged a bit more. Yumiko feels regret for leaving, saying if they had a vote, then they had a choice in the matter. Kelly, in her need to find Luke, mentions that when she was separated at Coalport, Luke was the one who came to find her. Connie stays behind with Kelly to continue the search, but a Whisperer is watching from the brush. Tara had sent out guards from Hilltop to retrieve them, but it seems Alpha’s henchman reported back and the group tracked them back to the colony. As Alpha makes her demands at the gate, Yumiko and Magna watch from the wall as Connie is forced to hide among the cornfields and Kelly is hurried inside with the guards. Lydia earlier warned that Alpha probably killed Luke and Alden, but if they’re still alive, the Whisperers may now acquire three of Hilltop’s people to trade for Lydia. Fear the Walking Dead Midseason Finale to Air After Dead City Premiere Fear the Walking Dead's midseason finale will not air in its typical 9 ET Sunday time slot on AMC. That's because the episode, which airs June 18th on the network, is now scheduled to premiere at 1012 ET after the series premiere of The Walking Dead Dead City. AMC has confirmed the new Maggie and Negan Walking Dead spin-off will take Fear's current time slot on June 18th with subsequent episodes airing Sundays at 9 through the first season finale on July 23rd. Fear will then wrap up the first half of its two-part eighth and final season and return with its remaining six episodes later in 2023. Both the Fear the Walking Dead midseason finale and The Walking Dead Dead City premiere will be available to stream early on AMC+ starting Thursday, June 15th. New episodes of Dead City's six-episode first season will premiere early on the streaming service on Thursdays. In the Fear midseason finale, titled "All I See Is Red," Morgan Jones Lennie James "fights his past as he is on a chase through the swamps," according to the official logline. Showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg co-wrote the episode directed by Walking Dead Universe veteran Michael E. Satrazemis. The penultimate episode of season 8A, "More Time Than You Know," will air in its usual time slot this Sunday, June 11th, at 9 on AMC. While the network has yet to announce when Fear the Walking Dead returns for the back half of its final season, Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios at AMC Networks, announced in January that the original Walking Dead spin-off would wrap up by the end of the year. "It's a truly exciting year for The Walking Dead Universe, as we conclude an epic journey on Fear the Walking Dead, which became one of the most successful shows in the history of cable television," McDermott said during the company's presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "And now we are set to bring forth the next iteration of the franchise – two new and anticipated series featuring the beloved characters of Maggie, Negan and Daryl." Along with Dead City and The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon, slated to premiere with its first six episodes this fall on AMC and AMC+, the network will tell "the next chapter in Rick and Michonne's unforgettable love story" when The Walking Dead Rick & Michonne airs in 2024. The Walking Dead Dead City series premiere airs Sunday, June 18th at 900 ET on AMC, followed by the Fear the Walking Dead midseason finale at 1012 ET. Closure is tricky, and Fear the Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 4 was one of the spinoff's finest hours because it was a natural progression for Morgan. He's been dealing with loss ever since The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1, and this latest chapter found him returning to the home his son died in and his deceased wife returned to every night to try to open the doors. I've had many complaints about how Morgan's arc has been handled on both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead; we got nostalgia and some of Lennie James' best work to date as he tried to find a way to put the Walker of his son Duane down. The series has mishandled many characters and storylines, but there was a level of authenticity here with Morgan's arc. Being closely tied to the original series, Morgan will always have a special place in fans' hearts, so botching Morgan's return to King County wouldn't go down well. At all. I didn't anticipate there would be so many characters along for the ride, but I appreciated how Morgan faced the sins of his past to allow him to proceed in life. Holding on to guilt for 12 years has shaped Morgan's arc. He wasn't strong enough to put the zombified version of his son down all those years ago, and Morgan had to do it here. Grace This is exactly what I was doing when we first met. Morgan No. You were burying your I was risking my life for people who were already dead. Morgan This is my son. Grace And it's Mo's life! We could have gotten away when Dwight and Sherry gave us the out. Morgan That wouldn't have worked. Grace You don't know that. Morgan I gotta do this. Only way I can be sure I can give that girl what she needs. Grace Why?Morgan I need to know that I won't let her down. Grace You are so scared of the past repeating itself that you don't even realize that you're the one who's making it happen. And now we're trapped in this house that you and Duane lived because you brought us here. Grace and Mo showing up came out of the blue, but at least Morgan had people who loved him along for this ride, even if it ended in disaster. Mo escaping from again was an eye-roll moment because the kid has escaped countless times over several episodes. I'm sure the writers could find something else to explain away her actions, but after the crapfest that was Fear the Walking Dead Season 7, Fear the Walking Dead is a work of art in comparison. have changed all of the relationships on the show, and Morgan bringing all the characters to meet the new villains changed their lives forever. Jenny was always outside. She would wander back here most nights. I don't know if it's 'cause she heard us in here or she could smell us, but I would... I'd sit and wait. I wanted to put her to rest, didn't want Duane to have to see his mother like that. A man named Rick Grimes gave me this rifle to do right by her, and I... never could. I don't know. I must have... come back here after Duane died. Morgan I never considered how Dwight and Sherry would feel about Morgan because, truthfully, how was Morgan to know that they would blossom into the biggest villains in series history? Dwight and Sherry are understandably driven by their time at the Sanctuary under the leadership of Negan. If you watch Fear the Walking Dead online, you know they struggle with most communities because they always fear they will turn into the place that changed their lives so much. Their resentment toward Morgan shaped the events of "Kings County" in a big way. They were desperate to find a way out with their son, Finch. Morgan I should've taken that deal from before. I put you and Mo in danger. Mo You made the right choice, Dad. Grace We just can't abandon Daniel and Madison. We have to get back to my truck. You can stop the walkers before they get to the house. You can make a path so we can get to the truck. You just have to "clear" for us. Morgan No. It is not that simple. Mo This is your second chance, Dad. Losing the first seven years of your child's life must be difficult, but thankfully, Finch is now well aware of who his parents are and the lengths they've gone to keep him safe. The problem with Finch knocking out Shrike and escaping the compound to the boat is that this compound is supposed to be safe, and these children keep running with ease. Surely, there should be much more security because if people can get out easily, I'm sure people could get in just as easily. Dwight and Sherry's plan to run away with their son wasn't well thought out because Shrike and her band of misfits would not allow them to escape without a fight. Morgan They're trying to burn us out. Here. Dwight We'll save you the bullet. This one's a courtesy kill. But the next one we light on fire keeps walking. Morgan Dwight, come on. I got Mo in here with me. You're gonna get her will. You got five minutes to turn yourself over... or I'm sending one up on that porch. Sherry We'll be waiting, Morgan. Morgan showing up in the nick of time will probably serve as his penance in their eyes, which might be the most exciting way to send the storylines at this point. Grace revealing that the radiation from Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 was catching up to her, only to be bitten by a walker while saving Mo, was a heartbreaking development that could change everything. Grace has shown everyone warmth in a world filled with horrible people, but if the show wanted to kill someone off in the final season, Grace would be the one that would get people talking. Then again, it's always possible that June will find a way to save Grace. She is investigating the theory that radiation will prevent the spread of the zombie virus. Finch is a walking example that it works. It's surprising just how well he is, given that we've witnessed the spread of the infection wipe people out fairly quickly. Morgan You shouldn't have done that. Dwight I'm not just gonna stand here and watch you get killed in cold blood, Morgan. You're not the only one trying to escape your past. What PADRE's doing... You know, making us do, it's like living at the Sanctuary all over again. Morgan Your boy's gonna end up just like mine. And I can't have that on me. I can't. The tricky part here is that Grace was dying at the end of the hour and seemed resigned to that fact. At this point, though, it feels like Grace is only dying to serve the narrative and bring warring factions together to take down Hopefully, I'm wrong, and Grace will bounce back and thrive beyond the series finale, but it's hard to have hope in this universe. We should know by this point not to get attached to any characters because they all die eventually. "King County" had decent storytelling, high stakes, and some of the best cinematography in franchise history. These showrunners can still play with expectations without making the storylines feel forced. Fear the Walking Dead has this knack for starting the season out strong, only for things to fall apart after a few episodes. Fear the Walking Dead Season 8 feels different. It's gradually improving with each episode, which could bode well for a satisfying series finale. What are your thoughts on Morgan's return to King County? He is one character who has come and gone repeatedly but has always been important. As he walked about the neighborhood aimlessly with no idea of what the world has come to, Morgan takes him in and cares for father-son duo are the first people Rick encounters after waking from his coma. They explain what has happened since the outbreak and care for Rick and his teach him how to put down the undead with headshots, and Rick, his law enforcement training kicking in, asks ” “We’re sure they’re dead? I have to ask.” Morgan assures him they are dead but explains that something in the brain is recharged, but they are indeed though Morgan understood what was happening with the undead, he couldn’t bring himself to kill the reanimated version of his wife. This would eventually prove a huge Walking Dead Morgan JonesWhen Rick and the Jones head their separate ways, the plan is to meet up in Atlanta. Rick honors his promise to radio them each evening, but he never hears from them. When he finds out that the undead overruns Atlanta, he does try to warn Morgan to stay away from the season 3, Rick, Michonne Danai Gurira, and Carl Chandler Riggs are on a supply run when they encounter a man who shoots at them from a rooftop. This will be revealed as Morgan, but his mental state has been severely affected by what he has encountered. He shares the story of being unable to kill his wife, which leads to Duane’s death, telling Rick that the weak have inherited the earth. He declines their invitation to join them at the prison as he knows much death will next time Morgan appears is in season 5 when he is seen on the railroad tracks that lead to Terminus. He eventually makes his way to Father Gabriel’s church, where he finds the note Abraham wrote on the map about the world needing Rick Grimes. This informs Morgan his friend is still this season, he is met at his campfire by a Wolves member. He eventually comes upon two men trapped in a van, Daryl Norman Reedus and Aaron Ross Marquand, and saves them. They invite him to Alexandria when he learns that Rick is gets a special episode in season 5 titled “Here’s Not Here.” This episode deeply delves into what made Morgan into the season 5 character we see. A man named Eastman John Carroll Lynch introduces him to the book The Art of Peace and teaches him about the art of Aikido defense, which states, “completely avoid killing, even the most evil person.”This alters Morgan significantly, and he learns his “all life is precious” mantra. But, it comes back to haunt him when he doesn’t kill the Wolves he met, and they end up infiltrating becomes a productive member of Alexandria until the end of season 8. After the Savior’s war, Morgan heads to Jadis’ Heaps and remains there alone.
